Driving in Morocco: license, road rules and practical tips
Is my French license valid in Morocco?
Yes. The French driving license (and any European license) is recognized in Morocco for tourist stays under 1 year. No international license needed. If your license is not in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese), an international license is recommended.
Important
Always carry your original license while driving. Photocopies are not accepted by police.
Road rules in Morocco
- Drive on the right, like in France
- Priority to the right unless indicated otherwise
- Seatbelt mandatory for all passengers
- Phone while driving prohibited (fine 300-700 MAD)
- Tolerated blood alcohol level: 0.0 g/l (zero tolerance)
Speed limits
- In town: 40-60 km/h
- National road: 100 km/h
- Highway: 120 km/h
- School zones and construction: 20-40 km/h
Fixed and mobile speed cameras are very common in Morocco, especially on highways and at city entrances. Strictly respect the limits — fines are immediate and non-negotiable.
Road conditions in Morocco
Moroccan highways are excellent: Agadir-Marrakech, Agadir-Essaouira (expressway), Marrakech-Casablanca. National roads are generally in good condition. However, tracks and secondary roads in the Anti-Atlas or towards wild beaches can be rough — an SUV like the Dacia Duster is recommended.
Highway tolls
Moroccan highways are tolled. Tolls are paid in cash (MAD) or by Jawaz card (electronic toll). Some examples:
- Agadir → Marrakech: about 80 MAD
- Marrakech → Casablanca: about 100 MAD
- Agadir → Essaouira: free (expressway)
Essential safety tips
- Avoid driving at night outside cities (carts, pedestrians, unlit animals)
- Watch out for motorcycles weaving between lanes
- At roundabouts, priority is theoretically to the left but not always respected
- In case of police check, stay calm and polite — keep your documents accessible
- Always carry water and a charged phone for long trips
