Why learn a few words of Darija?
Darija is Moroccan Arabic dialect — a living language that blends classical Arabic, Tamazight, French and Spanish. Different from MSA (Modern Standard Arabic), it is the everyday language for Morocco's 36 million people. Pronouncing a few words in Darija instantly transforms an interaction: guaranteed smiles, local prices, and genuine respect.
Greetings
- Salam Aleikoum — Hello, literally 'peace be upon you'. Response: Wa Aleikoum Salam.
- Labass? — How are you? Automatic response: Labass, hamdoulilah (fine, thank God).
- Sbah l'khir — Good morning. Response: Sbah nnour (morning of light).
- Msa l'khir — Good evening.
- B'slama — Goodbye.
Politeness
- Choukran — Thank you.
