Agadir to Marrakech by Car: Tolls, Real Drive Time and the Tizi n'Test Trap

What You Discover Once You're on the Road
You planned for three hours. You arrive in Marrakech after four. Between the toll at the Agadir exit, the two unplanned stops on the A7 motorway and the traffic jam on the outskirts of Marrakech, the Agadir–Marrakech route always has a few surprises in store. It's not that the itinerary is bad — it's that you rarely set off with the right information.
The Motorway Route: A7 End to End
The A7 motorway links Agadir to Marrakech over roughly 240 kilometres. On the Agadir side it starts at Amskroud, north-east of the city, and first crosses the foothills of the High Atlas — the most winding stretch of the drive — before dropping down to the Chichaoua plain and on to Marrakech. Dual carriageway all the way, 120 km/h limit, signs in Arabic and French.
Tolls: How Much, Where and How to Pay
On the A7 the toll depends on where you join and leave. For a standard car (Class 1), from Amskroud to Marrakech, the Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) scale runs from about 66 dirhams (Loudaya exit) to 91 dirhams (Palmeraie exit); the Targa exit, the most direct into the centre, is around 72 dirhams. Carry 100 dirhams in small notes per trip: not every booth takes foreign cards. Rates can change, so check the ADM website before you set off.
Real Drive Time: 3 Hours or 4?
Google Maps usually says 2 h 30 to 3 hours. With one stop, allow 3 to 3 h 30 instead. The real bottleneck is getting into Marrakech: in July–August and during Moroccan holidays it can add a good half hour. Leave before 7 am or after 3 pm to miss the traffic.
Rest Areas on the A7: Where to Stop
The A7 has several service areas with fuel, toilets and sometimes a small snack bar, but they are further apart than on European motorways. Fill up in Agadir before you leave: with the air conditioning on the whole way, consumption climbs fast.
The Tizi n'Test Alternative: Stunning, but Not for Everyone
The Tizi n'Test road (R203) links Taroudant to Marrakech through the High Atlas, over a pass at 2,093 metres. It is one of Morocco's most spectacular roads — and one of the most demanding: narrow, winding, often without crash barriers. From Agadir, allow 5 to 6 hours. It also runs through the area hit by the 2023 earthquake: the road surface there is still uneven and roadworks may be under way. Check before you go, and avoid it at night, in bad weather or if you are not used to mountain driving.
- A7 motorway: about 240 km, 3 to 3 h 30 with one stop, tolls of roughly 70 to 90 dirhams, the safest choice alone or with children
- Tizi n'Test (via Taroudant): about 300 km, 5 to 6 hours, narrow mountain road, no tolls, exceptional views — check for roadworks before you go
- Combine both: go up via the A7, return via Tizi n'Test — or vice versa — for a complete loop
Planning Your Departure from Agadir or Taghazout
The motorway does not start in town but at Amskroud, north-east of Agadir. If you are staying in Taghazout or Tamraght, you first have to drive back down to Agadir: leave early, the coast road is busy in the morning. If you are setting off from Agadir Al Massira airport, you will skirt round the city to reach Amskroud — build that time into your plan.
Choosing the Right Car for This Journey
The A7 motorway poses no particular challenge in terms of engine power. If you're considering the Tizi n'Test, however, a car with decent ground clearance and responsive steering is more comfortable — no need for a 4x4. Your GPS ignores the queue at the toll booth on a Friday evening, the closed petrol station 100 km from Marrakech and the hesitation in front of the Tizi n'Test sign. Prepare two things before you start: fill up in Agadir, and download an offline backup route. Waze and Google Maps work well on the A7, but mobile coverage in the Tizi n'Test gorges is patchy. Downloading offline maps the night before takes five minutes and can save fifty.

How Many Toll Booths Are There Between Agadir and Marrakech?
On the A7, you will pass through several ADM-operated toll booths. The exact number may vary depending on roadworks and network reorganisation. Carry dirhams in cash for each stop, as some booths do not yet accept foreign bank cards.
Is the Tizi n'Test Passable All Year Round?
No. In winter — typically December to March — the pass can be closed or snow-covered. Check conditions with local authorities before taking this route. In summer the road is open, but high temperatures make alertness essential.
Can You Drive Agadir–Marrakech and Back in One Day?
Technically yes, but that's over 7 hours of driving round trip, not counting time spent in Marrakech. It's doable but exhausting. The medina and souks deserve at least one overnight stay to be enjoyed without rushing.
