Timitar Festival: when Amazigh music makes Agadir come alive

    GadiWaze March 3, 2026 6 min

    The history of Timitar

Created in 2004 on the initiative of the Souss Massa Drâa Regional Council, the Timitar festival (meaning 'signs' in Tamazight) was born with a dual ambition: to celebrate Amazigh culture and to build bridges with world music. Over twenty years, it has become one of the great African festivals, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators.

    When and where?

The festival is typically held over 4 nights, on the main square and seafront esplanade of Agadir. Entry is free and concerts take place outdoors. Recent editions have been held in December, coinciding with other major events in Morocco.

    Iconic artists

    Timitar blends genres with coherence:
    • Amazigh music: Fatima Tabaamrant, Izenzaren, Ammouri Mbarek, Ahwach from Tiznit
    • Atlantic fusion: artists combining gnaoua, blues, reggae
    • International stage: Alpha Blondy, Oumou Sangaré, Arab and African artists
    • New generations: Moroccan rappers, fusion artists

Timitar is not a folklore festival. It is a demonstration of the vitality of a living culture.

The anniversary edition: 20 years of Timitar

The 20th anniversary edition marked a turning point: more than 20 performances over 3 nights, an enlarged main stage, and a programme that brought together legends and new talents. The context of AFCON 2025 in Morocco gave the event an additional international dimension.

    Planning your visit

    • Book your accommodation in Agadir well in advance: hotels fill up as soon as the programme is announced.
    • Come by car from the airport to have freedom of movement — parking available nearby.
    • Concerts start around 9pm and end after midnight.
    • Bring a light jacket — Agadir nights can be cool.

    Amazigh culture beyond the festival

Take advantage of your stay to explore other facets of Amazigh culture: silver jewellery at Agadir's souk, Berber rugs, the Tifinagh script on shopfronts, and of course argan — this local treasure inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.

To move freely between the stages, the seafront and the surroundings, consider renting a car in Agadir for the festival.
